May 3, 2020: The Fourth Sunday of Easter

We start today’s service with a welcome from the Vestry members who participated in the last video conference meeting. They miss everyone and hope you know they are working to keep the church on track through this difficult time.

Prelude: “Allegro” from Sonata in E Flat – Ludwig van Beethoven

Opening hymn: Hymn 495; Hail, Thou Once Despised Jesus!

1 Hail, thou once despised Jesus! Hail , thou Galilean king! Thou didst suffer to release us; thou didst free salvation bring. Hail, thou universal Savior, bearer of our sin and shame! By thy merit we find favor; life is given through thy name.

2 Paschal Lamb, by God appointed, all our sins on thee were laid; by almighty love anointed, thou hast full atonement made; All thy people are forgiven through the virtue of thy blood; opened is the gate of heaven, reconciled are we with God.

4 Worship, honor, power, and blessing thou art worthy to receive; highest praises, without ceasing, right it is for us to give. Help, ye bright angelic spirits, all your noblest anthems raise; help to sing our Savior’s merits, help to chant Emmanuel’s praise!

Leader: Alleluia! Christ is risen.
People: The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia!
Leader:  Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Cor. 15:57)

The People together
Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins
through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all
goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in
eternal life. Amen.

Lord, open our lips. And our mouth shall proclaim your praise. Glory to the holy and undivided Trinity, one God; as it was in the beginning is not and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Christ our Passover1 Cor. 5:7-8; Romans 6:9-11; 1 Cor. 15:20-22)

Alleuia.
Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us;
therefore let us keep the feast,
Not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil,
but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Alleluia.
Christ being raised from the dead will never die again;
death no longer has dominion over him.
The death that he died, he died to sin, once for all;
but the life he lives, he lives to God
So also consider yourselves dead to sin,
and alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord. Alleluia.
Christ has been raised from the dead,
the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.
For since by a man came death,
by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead.
For as in Adam all die,
so also in Christ shall all me made alive. Alleluia.

Musical Interlude: My Shepherd Will Supply My Need” – American folk melody

Sermon

The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.  He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again.  He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Collect of the Day
Celebrant and People

Let us pray:
O God, whose Son Jesus is the good shepherd of your people: Grant that when we hear his voice we may know him who calls us each by name, and follow where he leads; who, with you and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

A Collect for Sundays
O God, you make us glad with the weekly remembrance of the glorious resurrection of your Son our Lord: Give us this day such blessing through our worship of you, that the week to come may be spent in your favor; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (Page 98 BCP)

A Collect for Renewal of Life
O God, the King eternal, whose light divides the day from the night and turns the shadow of death into the morning: Drive far from us all wrong desires, incline our hearts to keep your law, and guide our feet into the way of peace; that, having done your will with cheerfulness during the day, we may, when night comes, rejoice to give you thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (P. 99, BCP)

Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love or you; for the honor of your Name. Amen. (P. 101 BCP)

We offer our intercessions, aloud or silently. After which, we pray:
Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen. (Prayer of Saint Chrysostom, BCP page 102)

Together we pray the General Thanksgiving:
Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pry, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen. (BCP page 101)

Leader: Let us bless the Lord.
Reply: Thanks be to God.

May the God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen. (Romans 15:13)

Closing Hymn: Hymn 208; Easter Hymn The Strife is O’er

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
1 The strife is o’er, the battle done, the victory of life is won; the song of triumph has begun. Alleluia!

2 The powers of death have done their worst, but Christ their legions hath dispersed; let shout of holy joy outburst, Alleluia!

3 The three sad days are quickly sped, he rises glorious from the dead; all glory to our risen Head! Alleluia!

4 He closed the yawning gates of hell, the bars from heaven’s high portals fell; let hymns of praise his triumphs tell! Alleluia!

5 Lord! by the stripes which wounded thee, from death’s dread sting thy servants free, that we may live and sing to thee.

Alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
